Biggleswade is a market town of around 17,000 people located about 40 miles (60 km) north of Central London (link opens in new window). It benefits from excellent transport links, with the A1 trunk road, and East Coast mainline trains reaching London in as little as 29 minutes.
Biggleswade has a high proportion of independent retailers and successful weekly markets based in the attractive historic centre. It has maintained good performance and activity in the recent economic recession with lower than average drops in residential values and commercial activity.
There are signs of recovery in the market place and there is an opportunity for the town centre to take advantage and move forward.
Planning for the future
A series of pubic consultations with residents and other stakeholders has allowed local needs and potential to be identified.
Thanks to the combination of good transport and an attractive environment, the town and its population are expanding, providing a larger catchment for inward investment.
The potential to further expand retail spaces, while increasing the variety of leisure opportunities was identified, along with the need to provide more office space.
There is also is a need to provide additional homes for a growing residential population.
The Biggleswade Town Centre Strategy and Masterplan (PDF 6.5MB) was adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) by Central Bedfordshire Council in July 2011.
The purpose of the plan is to identify, promote and guide new retail and housing-led development opportunities in Biggleswade town centre, ensuring that change and improvements are co-ordinated, including the delivery of infrastructure, public realm enhancements and new community facilities.
